Faster Charging

EV chargers are always quicker and safer than using a 3-pin plug.

For example, the Tesla Y – the best selling electric car in the UK in 2022 – takes 36 hours to fully charge on a 3-pin plug, but only 12 hours on a 7.4 kW charger.

The speed of an EV charger is determined by its power output measured in kilowatts (kW). The most common charger is 7.4 kW.

EVs also have a maximum charging rate between 7 kW and 22 kW. However only a few models can charge at a 22 kW rate, with most limited to 11 kW or less.

Fast Faster Charging

To charge above 7.4 kW you can get 22 kW chargers, but these require a 3-phase supply to work.

Many business premises have a 3-phase supply, but it is unusual for homes.

Rapid Charging

EVs can be charged even faster at so-called “rapid” rates of 50 kW or higher. But these are DC charging rates rather than AC.

The National Grid is only AC.
